Indian Key is an easy paddle from the south side of the Overseas Highway in Islamorada. Park in one of the pullouts along the highway at approximately MM 78 and drop your kayak straight into the water. You can also paddle out to Indian Key from the kayak rental at Robbie's Marina, but be warned that this is one of the more expensive rental locales. From the launch sites you will be able to see a small key less than 1Km off shore. This is Indian Key, now a Florida State Park. While this island is the former seat of the Dade County government, it now is an uninhabited historic park. There is a kayak landing beach to the left side of the dock found on the island or you can pull up to the dock itself. If you choose to go ashore and see the historic site then bring a few dollars for the entry fee. You can lounge on the dock for a paddling break without paying the fee. To the south side of the island there is some possible snorkeling. The water is quite shallow (less than 6 feet) but the visibility can be terrible if it has been windy in the prior days. On good visibility days it is possible to see small fish, eels, lobsters, etc hiding in the rocks and large sponges.
