Located about a 40 minute paddle from the launch point off Garden Cove Dr in Key Largo is an abandoned, run-aground, concrete barge. Underneath and around the barge can be found a host of fish, lobster, and the occasional nurse shark. When we visited there was also a small hammerhead shark trapped in the barge (not sure how it got there but it couldn't get out). The water clarity is usually pretty good however the best viewing is achieved by driving down to look under the barge as it is resting on the bottom in about 10 feet of water. Kayaks can be tied off to the barge itself and you can climb on top of the barge if you want a break, but be careful as the barge is decaying. Also be on the lookout for boats as this barge lies in a very high traffic area.
Access to the launch point is found by heading down Garden Cove Drive in Key Largo. This road is found to the Atlantic side of the island where the US 1 (Overseas Highway) splits with CR 905 which leads to Card Sound. Head down Garden Cove Drive past the marina until the road makes a left turn. You will see a rocky beach in front of you which is blocked by concreted barriers. Park anywhere along the road at this point and walk your kayak past the barriers. You should be able to see the barge out in the bay by looking out to sea from the beach.
